About this time of year, I start looking forward to receiving one simple email. No, it’s not about my tax refund or an alert saying when the snow is expected to melt (usually not until May). It’s the annual email from our CSA farm (Round River Farm), asking whether we’ll be members again for the coming season. I get excited to receive this email as it is the sign that another CSA season is right around the corner.
These are the days when I yearn for that full cooler of produce to arrive, even though it is still 3+ months away. There are so many wonderful things about the North Shore during the winter. Fresh fruit and veggies are, unfortunately, not one of them. While I don’t have the inspiration from a box full of veggies, I instead head to my cookbooks, hard drive, and the internet for inspiration. And there I do find it. I find delicious recipes that taste fresh, even though they are mostly composed of storage vegetables and maybe a sprig of fresh cilantro (like Beans and Greens Tacos with frozen kale from last summer’s CSA). And when I start to count the days until the CSA starts, I remind myself that my Finnish great-grandparents settled in Northern Minnesota and made it through the winter without a whole foods co-op. But, I’m still looking forward to that email and the arrival of the first cooler in June. 🙂
